Sourcing Construction Materials from Turkey: The Ghanaian Contractor's Playbook

Ghana's construction sector is spending heavily on infrastructure and residential development. Turkish tile, ceramic, steel, and glass manufacturers are winning contracts. Here is how the import process works end to end.

AGAnadolu Gateway Trade Intelligence

Ghana's construction sector has grown consistently above GDP for the past five years, driven by a combination of government infrastructure programmes, private real estate development in Accra and Kumasi, and hotel and hospitality investment. That growth is translating into rising import volumes for building materials — and Turkish manufacturers are increasingly competitive on price, quality, and lead time.

What Turkish Manufacturers Produce Well

  • Ceramic and porcelain floor tilesTurkey is the world's fourth-largest tile producer. MOQ from 500m² per reference. CE marked. Lead time 3–6 weeks.
  • Sanitary wareWCs, basins, bathtubs, and shower cabins to European design standards at 40% below European prices.
  • Steel profiles and rebarTurkish mini-mills produce to EN and BS standard grades. Often FOB Mersin at competitive rates versus South African or Chinese alternatives.
  • PVC windows and doorsVEKA and Rehau profile systems manufactured and processed in Turkey. Available pre-cut to your site drawings.
  • Float glass and mirrorsTurkey has three major float glass producers exporting to Africa. Standard sizes and custom cuts available.
  • Electrical cable and conduitTurkish cable manufacturers hold IEC and BS certifications and are active exporters to ECOWAS markets.
  • Paints and coatingsKansai Helios, Jotun Turkey, and several domestic manufacturers produce interior and exterior systems with tropical-climate formulations.

Certifications That Matter at Tema Port

Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) requires that structural materials meet a recognised international standard — EN, BS, or ASTM. CE marking on tiles, sanitary ware, and glass is accepted as equivalent. Steel must come with mill test certificates and, for government projects, GSA type approval. Electrical cable destined for installation work regulated by the Energy Commission requires GNBS compliance or an approved equivalent.

The single biggest cause of delay at Tema Port for first-time importers of Turkish building materials is missing or incorrectly translated mill test certificates. Turkish manufacturers will issue these documents but they are not always proactive about including them with the shipping documents. Build this requirement into your purchase order terms.

Typical Order Economics

  • Minimum containerMost building materials move in 20ft or 40ft FCL. A 20ft container holds roughly 25 tonnes or 180m³.
  • FOB costsTurkish construction materials typically price FOB Mersin or FOB Istanbul. Sea freight to Tema adds $1,800–3,200 per 20ft container depending on the shipping line and season.
  • Customs dutyGhana levies 0–10% import duty on most construction materials under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, with a 12.5% VAT on CIF value. Ceramic tiles carry a 10% duty.
  • Payment30% T/T advance with the balance against documents is standard. Letters of Credit are accepted by larger Turkish exporters.
  • Lead time to siteAllow 10–14 weeks from order confirmation to site delivery: 3–5 weeks production, 3–4 weeks ocean transit, 2–3 weeks port clearance and inland.

How Anadolu Gateway Verifies Construction Material Suppliers

Every construction materials supplier on GoldBazarr has had their factory documents reviewed, their export history checked, and their certifications confirmed before their profile is made visible to buyers. For large orders, Anadolu Gateway can arrange third-party pre-shipment inspection (PSI) at the Turkish factory — a service that typically costs 0.3–0.8% of cargo value and eliminates the most common source of disputes.
